Out of Storage

FRAC Nord-Pas de Calais

FRAC Nord-Pas de Calais aims to make contemporary art accessible for a broad audience on a regional, national and international scale. The FRAC collection of almost 1500 artworks from diverse disciplines (photography, painting, sculpture, performance, video, installation and design), testifies to the richness and diversity of contemporary art. Historical works from movements such as Arte Povera, conceptual or minimal art, are brought into connection with more recent artistic productions.

Since ten years, the FRAC Nord-Pas de Calais is located in Dunkirk. In those years, several projects and partnerships were initiated, from travelling exhibitions to loans of works, as is the case in the exhibition Out of Storage in the Timmerfabriek in Maastricht. The FRAC offers reflections on innovating ways of cultural communication in order to reach ever broader groups of people. Next to exhibitions, the FRAC initiates educational projects in school, for example through the program Elèves à l’œuvre.

In 2013, the FRAC enters a new epoch with the move to a building in the harbor of Dunkirk. Architects Lacaton & Vassal proposed to built a copy of the hall AP2, one of the valuable remains of the shipping industry in Dunkirk. This building will give the FRAC the opportunity to make new exhibition spaces, a depot, administrative spaces and spaces for communication and activities.
